B-17 down

Post by Cono »

I always hate hearing about the loss of one of these great planes.

Heard about this yesterday, a real shame. Alot of people especially the media saying it crashed but as you can see from the photo it made a perfect emergency landing. Poor girl, if it made it back to the field it might of been saved by the fire crew. :(

I disagree. There are enough already parked. I like to see a few flying still. I love to hear those Pratt and Whitneys and the Merlins. I remember being in Augusta at the Toyota dealership picking out a car back in 1983 with my Dad. I heard a familiar noise overhead and immediately told my Dad to look around as there was a P-51 Mustang flying somewhere overhead. Lo and behold if it wasn't a P-51D Mustang. I'd know that sound anywhere. It's a familiar to me as the sound of a UH-1 Huey.

My Dad tells stories of P-51 Mustangs on low-level training missions buzzing him and the German POWs he was working down in South Georgia back during WWII. A lot of times, they would fly right down the railroad tracks with their props barely clearing the rails.

Guys there are now only 14 flyable b-17's left. Its a shame to see one go. Cono i agreee i love the sight of the b-17 flying at airshows,in fact the one that went down i went on a tour of her and saw her fly about 10 yrs ago at an airshow.
And Duke nice to see ur still around need to get back in game ya know??

It is a shame to see we lost another airframe. I do hope they finish the restoration on the now 15th airworthy airframe soon.

We need more airworthy vintage airframes.
