HOMER, Mich. — Police say a 12-year-old Michigan boy was shot and killed when a gun being cleaned by his father went off.

Police say Ian Dunn died Tuesday afternoon at the home about 90 miles west of Detroit. Police are investigating, but they say the shooting appears to be accidental.

Police Chief Steven Fisher tells WWMT-TV that the father, 41-year-old Kevin Dunn, was cleaning the rusty gun. Fisher says it had been in storage for some time and the father had forgotten that there was a round in it.

The boy was struck in the head when the gun went off. He had been home sick from school.

This guy is a total idiot and now he has to live with killing his son over his OWN stupid avoidable mistake.

For those of you that dont know:

Please watch the video if you own a firearm as it is VERY important.

I cannot stand people who handle firearms improperly and it infuriates me. If you have a gun accident I have no sympathy for you, only anger.

I don't understand why all the people in the US are allowed to carry firearms?

What a waste of life, what a situation for a perant. As a parent, I could not image being in that position, let alone have something so dangers around the home when I have children around.

A farmer or rancher, I can kind of understand having a rifle, but not a gun. A gun is meant for only one thing!

It is for self defense and preventing invasion, along with gov abuse (not that thats happening lol). But seriously There is no problem with 100000000000000000 people owning a fire arm. It is when someone does something stupid like this that the wrong people get hurt.

If you break into my house, you will get a .44 or a .45 slug straight to the dome. If you try to car jack me, again .45 to the forehead.

This parent is a total retard for cleaning his gun with a round in the chamber. As the video shows it is very simple not to have an accident. Follow the proper procedure you are fine. It is the ignorant and stupid that fark up with firearms. This guy apparently was cleaning his weapon WITHOUT making sure it was clear! That would be like cutting both your wrist and swimming in a pool of sharks. Will they eat you? Maybe not, but 99% of the time they will. If you are stupid with a firearm like this guy 99% of the time you will hurt someone.

Without guns in this country, only the criminals would have guns. The crime rate would sky rocket. One of the few things keeping these street thugs from robbing everyone on the block is 5 out of 10 houses on the block keep a loaded firearm within arms reach.

Main4ce, when ever u come to the states, if you are interested we can go to the range, and I will teach a class on gun safety and we can fire some good vintage guns. I will be purchasing a Colt 1911 in the next 8 months. My accessible arsenal includes: a M1 Garand, SKS, AK47, AR15, Dragonov, .44 Mag, S&W .38, Ruger .22 semi, Mosin Nagain, Glock 17 9mm, and a few assorted others. I think a day at the range for the next mini con I can attend would be LOADs of fun.

I get what you guys are saying and why, thing is you will always have idiots (one born every sec so I heard :) ), after all their are no tests to pass before becoming a parent!

With a total gun ban, the bad guns would also find it hard to get one, although the black market would always be there to supply. In a way it's a catch 22 situation. Other countries that also have high crime rates do not have the situation where everyone can own a gun. That said in the UK it’s kids with knifes that are the problem, a knife ban would be a bit stupid as you can just go and take one out of kitchen.

Germany on the other hand is a safe country on the whole; you are safe to walk the streets almost anywhere at any time of day or night. Because I've lived hear for most of my life I guess that makes it hard for me to understand especially when the vast majority of Germans are non violent or even anti violent!

Thats sounds like a nice collect there Trevor, I remember back to when I was in the Army, I couldn't wait to get my rifle and to get a day on the ranges, after a couple of years it did however become quite boring, not the firing but the hours we had to spend cleaning the weapons afterward, even when they where spotless you where always sent back by some snotty nosed office straight out of school to clean it again. lol those where the days.....NOT!

What an idiot.

Darwinism at work.

I ALWAYS clear my weapon prior to cleaning it. I've even been known to check it 2, 3, even 4 times. If someone is with me, I even have them check it.

I do the same thing going to and leaving the firing range. I verify that the weapon is safed and cleared. If someone is with me, I have them verify it as well.

One time, I took my 9mm to my parents home. My Dad and I were going to the range that weekend. My sisters were there with their kids (3 boys, all 4-7 years old). Before I even entered the house, I had safed and cleared my weapon and then disassembled it placing the pieces in two different locations. As it was, the boys did rummage through my belongings and found the frame and grip. It scared the crap out of my sister until I told her what I'd done.

I've had my weapon in my vehicle with my 8 year old nephew. He never sees it or touches it. He also leaves the vehicle before I do and never enters it before I do.

Oh, Trevor, you'll get the shivers out of this story.

I was heading to Ft. Gordon one weekend to go to the commissary and PX. I was stopped at the gate for identification and as I was waiting to get through, I remembered that I had my weapon with me. As you know, it is a Federal offense to carry a weapon onto a military base. I informed the rent-a-cop that I had a weapon in my vehicle and knew that it was not allowed on base and that I needed to return home. The rent-a-cop told me all that wasn't necessary. I could just drive back outside the base and hide it in the bushes along the road!!!!!!!

Needless to say, I didn't do that and I got his name and reported him to the base commander. He probably got a promotion and is now guarding our nuclear arsenal.

jesus, hide it in the bushes! wtf. Dude needs to get smacked. Good job reporting him, if I saw him again i would have told him I had a bazooka and see what he said. LOL! Thats what the gov gets for contracting out work when we have MPs for that job.

on the other hand, this would not happen in most contries in europe, at least not in such extent.
http://www.nytimes.com/2009/03/11/us/11 ... ing&st=cse

in US he bought guns and lots of amo in wallmart next to apples section without problem. In most european countries he had to proceed long time checking, psychological tests, he had to revalidate firearms certificate in some time period and he had a high chance they they will find something is wrong with him and help him, or just simply didnt give him gun. he didnt have a chance to get bigger guns either.

Such a psycho would probably still kill, but there is high chance he will get only to cold weapons and at least that driver and people standing on streets would live, and other victims should have little beter chance to run away, and een for such a psycho is probably harder to kill someone with knife in close combat and look at victims eyes than pull a trigger...

we have such a saying: "Each coin has two sides."

This morning in Germany, 16 dead after 17 year old kid runs amok at a highschool.

The 16 death being the kid shooting. Reports state 3 teachers, 9 students and two passers by dead. Plus 2 policemen badly wounded.

http://www.spiegel.de/international/ger ... 12,00.html

http://www.google.com/hostednews/ap/art ... wD96RSITO0

It states in the German report that the gun was illegal, taken from his father who has/had a total of 16 weapons which all been bought from the black market.

So much for my statement earlier in this thread!

Media reports said the teenager's parents had 18 licensed firearms in their home, and that he had used one of the weapons, an Italian-made Beretta pistol, for the shooting. His father Jörg K. belongs to a gun club and may face prosecution if it turns out that he didn't keep them sufficiently locked up.
No one hunts with a beretta. Infact this is the standard issue US. Military Side Arm. Often used for self defence ( I would not recomend a 9mm). This kid had a problem I guess. I wonder if one of the teachers had a firearm they could have prevented so many deaths.

This kid had a lot of head shots too, either he was trained with the weapon or he was point blank and execution style in the murders.

This is why I think teachers should have the option of carrying a concealed firearm. I would suggest a Glock Model 23.

Personally, I've never cared for the Glocks. But, it's been a number of years and I haven't tried all the models. I like my Taurus PT92AF (9mm), but would toss it in a heartbeat for a Colt M1911A1. All that would be for personal protection. For home defense, a Remington 870 Express is my choice.
