Hello again...

Post by FuelPump »

After a number of years of posting things like "I'll be back in the game soon", I'm finally downloading the game to see if it will run on my POS Commodore 64 emulator. Hopefully my new video card will let me get a little more than random and regular CTDs.

It'll be good to get back in the game and re-learn the finer points of snotting the axis factories, and talking crap.

I've missed you guys! :D

I feel like a new recruit Reddog... But once I get to the pointy end of a DB, I'm sure it will come back to me with a bit (alot) of practise.

It seems you guys have re-written the book on bombing anyway.

But... So far, no luck.

I downloaded the game, and haven't gotten any further than the login screen. I hit the "Play" button, and after a few seconds my video card fries itself. I get a screen with all the colours of the rainbow, and a complete lock up requiring a reboot.

I had a look at the link you posted Sniper. My card is an nVidia GeForce GTX 550 Ti.

Not the top-of-the-range, but I would have thought it would get past the first screen at least... It doesn't even get far enough to CTD.

I'll have a go at reloading the card drivers. Worth a shot anyway.

No luck. I clean reinstalled my video driver, but I'm still getting the same problem. Thanks for your help Sniper.

I'm keen to get back into the game, but I'll be flying out tomorrow afternoon to go to work. I'll be back home again in about a week. I've got internet at the camp, but it's pretty unreliable, so I may be out of contact while I'm away.

I might also try to reinstall the game and see how that goes.

Here is my DXDiag. Not such a shitty computer after all. It was an insurance job after my old one got wiped out in a big hail storm that got inside the house and trashed everything:

I'm keen to get back into the game, but I'll be flying out tomorrow afternoon to go to work. I'll be back home again in about a week. I've got internet at the camp, but it's pretty unreliable, so I may be out of contact while I'm away.

I might also try to reinstall the game and see how that goes.

Here is my DXDiag. Not such a shitty computer after all. It was an insurance job after my old one got wiped out in a big hail storm that got inside the house and trashed everything:

ouch! weather aint nothin to play around with, you still mining?

if ide have to take a guess ide say you need more RAM, you should go download some more... ive got 4GB in my laptop running win7 64bit and am using 29% of the total ram just typing this, so thats about 60% of 2GB. the game need more then that to run correctly i think.

i was able to run my old AMD dual core with the game this past weekend and ive got a 9800GT video card in that one, other than updating your sound drivers too thats about all i can think of

I agree with snipples I would look at the ram first and up it to 4GB, even though 2GB is minimum for Windows 7 64bit I never found it quite enough.
Memory is fairly cheap these days so it wouldnt break the bank to bump it up and see if it helps.

4 Gigs of ram for sure fuelpump.

By the way, where have you been man. You've been sorely missed my friend. It will be good to fly with you again. By the way, if you can't get it fixed by the second week in July, just hop on a plane and meet us all at reddog's crib. We have plenty of machines you can fly on.

I'll update my sound drivers and scratch up my coins to get some more RAM. With a bit of luck that might do it.

I've been busy.... For a variety of reasons, I've put the flying on the back burner, and gotten into a traineeship (like an apprenticeship) in the mining industry. I work at a place called Murrin Murrin which is about 400-500 miles north east of Perth in the desert, and currently work 12 hour days for 8 days, then get flown back for 6 days of R&R.

It's hard work, and dangerous. But at least the pay is lousy.

On a brighter note, once I finish the traineeship, I'll be on decent money, and I'll work a two weeks on, two weeks off roster. Might even have the time and money to make it to a minicon at some point, although not right now.

The odds are pretty good that I'll be offered a job here once I finish my training, as there are plenty of people leaving all the time.

Something about the constant exposure to flammable and/or toxic gasses, high pressure acid, and high pressure superheated steam that makes people think twice about staying here for very long.

I love it! :-)

It's like being in the Iran/Iraq war. You work for a bunch of c@nts who send you out to get bombarded by chemical agents and nasty stuff in the desert.

My brother Nick (Jakenick ingame) has been here for 8 years, as a mechanical fitter...

My training is to be a process plant operator. Depending on where I end up (there are a few different areas), I could be doing anything from running a part of the refinery, a water treatment plant, high pressure acid leach plant, power station, acid plant, or whatever.

I'm interested in the power station side of things (boilers, a gas turbine like a big jet engine, a couple of steam turbines, high pressure steam pumps, all the good stuff). But if I get into that area, I'll probably have to start out in the acid plant, which can be quite nasty.

To do much of the work there, you need to wear a head to toe goretex acid suit, with a full face respirator. Also acid proof rubber gloves and boots. Just for good measure, you need to carry a belt with the radio, a backup respirator, tools equipment etc. Not so much fun when the ambient temperature is over 40C in summer (I think that's about 110F). Then you've got the euipment you are working on, which contains stuff running at up to 480C if the ambient temperature is not high enough.

It's easy to drink well over a gallon of water and industrial grade isotonic drinks (like Gatorade, but better) during the day to replace the sweat you lose. I came close to getting heat stress one day when all I was doing was sitting in a forklift, not really doing much. Sitting in the sun with the full suit on for an hour or so was enough to do it. I feel sorry for the poor buggers during the Gulf War who had to wear the Nuclear/Biological/Chemical suits which are very similar to acid suits all the time. They can really suck on a hot day.

Anyway, it's all good, and it will allow me a bit of freedom to do a bit more with my life. Such as sitting on the couch scratching my arse, or playing online games.

Oh, and I got engaged. That should be a good way of making sure I don't have enough spare money to get into too much trouble. :icongotcha:

I'm at work right now, with a little down time. I'll be back home on Wednesday.

Have a good one!

A quick update...

I still need to sort out some RAM, but things have been a bit hectic.

My car pretty much died, so I had to blow all my loot on another one. I bought myself a nice old Ford Falcon XR6 (an Aussie design, don't think there is an equivalent in Europe or America. A Mustang might be close). It's only a six cylinder (I have a thing for V8s) but it goes well, and is the sportier model with pretty much race suspension, and the six cylinder puts out more power than the stock V8 anyway. Very nice to drive, and I have been restraining myself from wrapping it around a tree, or parking it in someone's house at high speed.

But... My last week off, some bozo decided to park his car in the arse of my car while I was stopped at a red light, and did extensive damage. Due to a lack of motivation and/or proactiveness, I hadn't quite gotten around to insuring my car yet. I was actually going to set it up that day. So now my car is in very fragile shape, and I'll have to pray to the gods of paperwork to get the whole lot fixed by the other guy's insurance company, as he is completely at fault. I can't see that being an easy process.

On a good note, it appears that I have been offered a position here, once my traineeship finishes. So I'll be on the big bucks sooner rather than later, and I'll be more or less a man of leisure for roughly six months of the year (mind you, I'm currently doing 96 hours of work a week, so the first couple of days back I generally do very little of anything but sleep, eat, watch porn, sleep, catch up with my movie downloads, sleep, and watch more movies/porn).

Anyway, I'll be back in the fullness of time.
