DCS is something I've not gotten into and decided to check things out. Apparently it's just a ton of $40-70 addons??

Yes, there are a ton of add-ons, the best way to approach it if you have not tried DCS before is to find a plane you like and just stick to that while you learn how everything works, some amazing tutorials out there if you want a bit of everything maybe the F-18, the F-5 is a good plane to start as a newbie with and Helos either the Gazelle or Huey. There is the Hoggit server which allows you to fly online in a practice environment, then when you get comfortable head over to Enigma's cold war server or one of his dynamic campaign servers.
