ive heard about DCS but never really looked into it. I dont think it's geared toward strat bombing like we like. Most of what Ive heard about the actual game had to do with flying Hinds around. I see there are a 109 and P51 pack though...

DCS is supposed to be the next big thing for simmers. However, it's starting to look like a cash grab, as the devs are releasing the game in pieces by "selling"
individual aircraft types. If you want to fly a certain aircraft, other than the basic (two?) types the game comes with, you have to purchase the expansion pack for that aircraft.

There is a project in the works, "DCS WWII: Europe 1944," but it seems to be vaporware, so far. LINK to forums

The current "main" sim is IL-2 Sturmovik: 1946, or other versions of the IL-2 "family." They're all called IL-2 in some manner, but most of them are built in different engines by different developers, so they don't have as much in common with one another as the names would imply. One of the main sites to go to, to get in fights, is HyperLobby. LINK They host servers for a number of flight sim games.

Now, if anyone is REALLY serious, there are a couple units I can recommend.

FIGHTERS:
352nd Virtual Fighter Group, The Blue-nosed Bastards of Bodney - They are the only online group, of which I'm aware, which has actually been adopted by their real-life counterparts. The virtual Bluenosers are full members of the 352nd Fighter Group Association, and have attended reunions and such, having also brought some of their gear to let the real-life pilots see the action in the virtual skies. In fact, one member's father was a real-life Bluenoser. They actually flew a virtual version of a mission he had flown in RL, and he got to fly on the mission. He said he did better on the virtual mission than he did in the RL one. :) The 352nd flies a highly modified version of IL-2 Stumovik: Forgotten Battles. LINK to 352nd's website

352nd VFG Hall of Honor - Part 1

BOMBERS:
The Blackbirds - Strictly a bomber squadron (with a few escorts, here and there), the Blackbirds fly a version of 1946 (see above), but also fly in other versions of IL-2 as the need arises. LINK to Blackbirds' website Here also is a link to a memorial for a pilot (Trapper) who passed away. He was in the Blackbirds, as well as the 352nd and the AKA Wardogs. LINK to Wardogs' website

Unfortunately, none of the other sims is either a full combined arms game or has a persistent universe (ongoing campaign). Players just fly individual missions. Sometimes they may fly a series of missions, in sequence, to simulate a campaign, but it's nothing like WWIIOL. In that way, WWIIOL is still unique. The closest would be Heroes & Generals, but that's so much of an arcade shooter it's pathetic.

BTW, the Rats have stated multiplayer was one of the fixes in this last patch, so it should be working now.

Hmmm, I have looked at the readme of the latest patch, nothing about a fix, and I just tried MC in a Bomber. Looks like the same laggy ass shiate as it has been since KFSONE ripped the 350,000+ lines of code out.

I think I saw where it was a goal of 1.35, but not yet.

I thought they said 1.35 had the fix? If that's the case then let's get started on training. Charlie knows well how fast we can gain members simply by training. I will participate when I can. Training was actually my thing. I love teaching bombing. In fact I love it so much, I used myself as target on the ground.

Seriously, if I can get Windstream to get off their ass I'll be happy to start a weekly bombing training session again. Of course, it would take participation from those of you qualified bomber pilots that I can get to help.

Hi Reddog good to hear from you.

I have Blackshark 2 and DCS World which is nice to muck around in multiplayer.

Enduring confrontations are still in beta in War Thunder, these 4 hours missions might be something we could all enjoy as a squad and we would not be limited to how many players in a group can join. No date on release but it is looking more like early 2016 so a little way off yet but would be an idea to keep an eye on it as I think we all enjoyed our time flying together in War Thunder in those B-17s.

You're right. I misread their dev roadmap. Dagnabbit! I forgot and missed my appointment for that Alzheimer's test again! How many times is that? Ahh, who cares.

Hey guys.

Enduring Confrontation is still in beta as mentioned, they do a couple of events every month and been going on since June I believe, last one was a few weeks ago. It is very difficult to catch unless you are on their forums a lot or play the game and you see it in the event list, but as you can see from the video below the timer on the top left shows 276 minutes which is about 4.5 hours. They are trying to balance the battle ratings each time they do one of these betas. From what I have seen you kind of start from your BR1 plan and work your way up from points you achieve during the mission. the Ultimate goal is World War which we have been waiting for an eternity for but Enduring Confrontation is just baby steps in the right direction and may provide the playground 617 Sqdn to muck around in, like I said above we did have fun during those realistic battles.

Not taking anything away from WW2Online it is/was a great game and I hope Xoom and team bring some life back into RDP from v1.35

617DB in War Thunder last year.

She sure took some punishment!

Some video info from Phily about how Enduring Confrontations works (subject to change of course)

From what I've seen, isn't War Thunder a pay-to-win game? If you can buy "upgrades" for your aircraft, I want no part of it. Historically, every aircraft of the same model (as in the D model of the P-51) was pretty much identical to every other, with the exeption of field mods which were sometimes necesssary due to parts availability and tech orders of the time. A pilot (or unit) couldn't "pay extra" to get the best engine or guns or whatever. That totally ruins the game for me.
