The one depicted on the map came later, after Monty had made his way up the coast into Belgium. The first ones came from the south coast of England (i.e. Isle of Wight) into Normandy. It was necessary until the Allies were able to capture major ports (i.e. Cherbourg and Le Havre). Even after capturing the ports, they were still necessary. Perhaps the greatest engineering and logistical feat of WWII. The U.S. had a very minor role, mainly supplying steel pipe. Full credit to the Brits for this one. I had learned about it traveling around Normandy when I lived over in Europe 12 years ago. What was accomplished in WWII by the Allies still amazes me and I often wonder if we still have it in us to do it again should a similar situation arise.
